Despite less than satisfactory sales of its BlackBerry 10 platform, the company is determined to improve and expand the BlackBerry 10 market.

The company’s BlackBerry 10 platform has received quite a bit of criticism since its release. One of the biggest criticisms has been the lack of shiny new applications like iOS and Android are carrying. BlackBerry intends to remedy that situation, and soon. The company has been working with app developers to create new, more interactive BlackBerry apps for its platform. The company announced several new applications or the platform to expand the 70,000 apps it has at launch. Harmon.ie is one of the developers BlackBerry has been working with in this process. Harmon.ie created an application that allows Office 365 collaboration on BlackBerry 10 devices meaning users would access Microsoft Office applications as well as offline file storage.

According to the analyst firm Gartner, smartphones are essential to growth in the mobile market. “The success of Apple and Samsung is based on the strength of their brands as much as their actual products. Their direct competitors, including those with comparable products, struggle to achieve the same brand appreciation among consumers, who, in a tough economic environment, go for cheaper products over brand,” said Anshul Gupta, a research analyst at Gartner. BlackBerry is under immense pressure to up its game when it comes to the company’s smartphones and its operating system. Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS has surpassed BlackBerry in sales. As BlackBerry’s share of the smartphone market continues to decline, the company needs to do something to reinvigorate its sales, and fast.
