Nokia is boosting the capabilities of its Lumia phones running Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system with a software update codenamed Amber.
In a blog post, Nokia said Amber promises a “wide range of new and improved features and apps” based on the latest update for Windows Phone 8.
“Lumia Amber builds upon the latest update for Windows Phone 8 from Microsoft. In itself, this provides a number of significant additions: a new FM radio player and improvements to Xbox music and the Internet Explorer browser,” it said.
Among the features offered by Amber are the Nokia Glance Screen with the standby clock, and an improved imaging experience.
Improved image processing
Image processing, one of the strongest suits of the Nokia phone range, will get an upgrade with “significantly improved algorithms.”
These promise “better noise reduction, color reproduction, exposure control and autofocus to every phone across the Lumia range,” Nokia said.
“On the Lumia 920, controls to adjust the ISO settings of the camera from 800 to 3200 allow for even better low light performance,” it added.
With Amber, Nokia added a Smart Camera app that is “ideal for taking pictures involving people and movement.”
The Nokia Pro Camera will also be available for the Lumia 920, Lumia 925, and Lumia 928, with users allowed to quickly edit videos with the Nokia Video Trimmer app and upload them to YouTube with Nokia Video Upload.
Other extras
Other extras bundled with Amber include:
- Nokia Glance Screen: brings clock to the screen when the phone is inactive, as well as with indicators for battery level and if the phone is set to “silent.”
- Flip to silence and double-tap to wake
- Storage Check and faster map updates
A separate report on The Next Web, meanwhile, said Amber shows why “it simply doesn’t make sense to buy a Windows phone that isn’t a Nokia Lumia.”
